Living Green:Err On The Side Of Caution

There is a lot of debate among politicians, big businesses, environmental agencies and even in neighborhood coffee shops about global warming and its impact on the planet and its people.

There are studies saying it doesn’t exist and others that say it does. Studies that say it’s getting worse and others saying it’s getting better. I don’t know the truth about global warming or if it’s going to be a major factor in changes in the Earth’s climate, but why not err on the side of caution?

I know people who don’t recycle or do any other environmentally friendly things because they believe it’s not necessary. They are fervently against the idea of global warming and let that belief shape their environmental habits.

Living green isn’t a major inconvenience. Sure, you may need to take a few extra minutes to sort your garbage or spend a little extra for cloth shopping bags, but if it helps out the environment, then isn’t it worth it? Regardless of whether global warming exists or not, wouldn’t you rather live green, just in case? I would hate to think that 500 years from now, as our entire planet turns into a rain forest, my great-great-great-great-great-grandchildren will be asking why my generation didn’t recycle more or drive more hybrids.

I would rather live green now, even if it doesn’t really make a difference, because at least I’m trying. I don’t want my descendants to live on some barren tundra or grow gills like Kevin Costner in “Waterworld.” OK, so the gill thing is probably unlikely (although pretty cool), but you catch my drift. While I doubt that global warming will cause a major societal breakdown where people live on man-made islands, I don’t want to take that chance.

That movie was horrible, and I certainly don’t want my descendants to have to live in such conditions. The outfits alone are enough to make me want to end global warming. I don’t think we really needed an eye patch on Dennis Hopper; it just made him look like a ghetto pirate.

All jokes aside, people will debate global warming for decades to come and they’ll still be arguing as their homes get swallowed by the tides. In the meantime, I’m going to keep doing my part just in case I might actually be helping. I would rather err on the side of caution than have my grandchildren get bit in the behind.
