Thanksgiving For The Memories

Thanksgiving For The Memories
When I was a kid, Thanksgiving was a major family holiday. We had close and extended family packed into my aunt’s house and the tables were filled with every food imaginable. The Thanksgivings of my childhood are filled with memories of playing tag in the backyard and watching football games with the men.

I remember sitting at the kids’ table and the feeling of exhilaration when I finally graduated to the adult table. Sadly, like most things, time has a way of undoing traditions and functions as everyone grows up and gets too busy or becomes preoccupied with their own lives. Little by little, the Thanksgiving feast got smaller and smaller.

The kids grew up and moved away. The other family members got older and soon grand-kids entered the picture, so they stopped coming to have their own festivities. My aunt still has it every year, but there are only a dozen or so people who show up.

Even I have missed it the last two years because of problems with the three-hour drive and getting everyone out and about. That’s the problem with time. It never leaves anything untouched. I am working on creating my own Thanksgiving traditions and trying to keep alive the ones my mom and dad started with me, so many years ago.

I am thankful for my memories of times gone by and the new memories that come each year. My children are developing their own memories as well, and I hope that when they are adults they will look back upon them as fondly as I do mine.

We may not have a gigantic feast and a house filled to the brim with people, but we’re still young. Our family will grow, and who knows what will happen in the future. Savor each second that goes by and treat life as a gift because it truly is. Everything changes for the better and worst, so grab hold and don’t let go until you absolutely have to.

I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving and that their home will be as bright and jubilant as my own.
